Great place in terms of beauty and swimming and to take small children but parking is dreadful. Not even allowed to pull up on the side to drop and pick up members of your party. Nowhere to buy food and drinks
Parking lots were all closed, road signs said no stopping, no walk-ins, no drop-offs. That didn't stop hordes of people walking in, nor lots of stopping and dropping. This place is overrun by locals and doesn't cater at all to visitors (we came across the country to see it and then could not). The scene reminds me of the Joni Mitchell song "Big Yellow Taxi"...they paved paradise and put up a parking lot...basically. Thoreau would just be sick.
A beautiful New England park with quiet clean beaches on a medium sized pond. Plan your parking in advance as space s fill up quickly and there are only 2 or 3 times a day when you can enter the parking area. Consider parking 1 mile away then biking or walking your way to the water.
One of those awesome little places that I had to visit on my last. I came in November so it was a little crisp but oh so beautiful. I'd love to come back in the summer.
The visitors center and store are lovely and the stroll next to the pond to the original Thoreau cabin site is short and sweet. Bring a rock to leave on the pile in remembrance of a loved one. - Be advised, no dogs are allowed and the gate for parking closes promptly, so make sure you're out of there on time. There are higher parking fees for out of state plates (we visited on Veteran's day and there was no charge). Overall, this was a wonderful trip and we'll visit there again in the summer.
A beautiful place to reflect on what matters...
